The Sleeping Bear area offers enough to keep even the most adventurous outdoors enthusiast busy with hiking, fishing, cycling, canoeing, kayaking, skiing, snowshoeing and more.

  • Catch a ferry to South Manitou Island.
  • Visit Leelanau’s small towns – Glen Arbor, Leland, Northport, Sutton’s Bay to explore the independent retailers and delicious local food. (Mario Batali’s favorites include Heart and Vine in Sutton’s Bay and Frenchies Famous in Traverse City.)
  • Head to Cherry Republic – a mecca of cherry-themed products. You can taste sweet treats and find yummy gifts.
  • Paddle down the serene waters of the Crystal River in a kayak from Crystal River Outfitters.
  • Climb the dunes, hike to the Lake Michigan shoreline and back, drive through the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive and enjoy the sunset atop the 400 foot dune.
  • Charter a fishing boat, take a fly-fishing lesson or rent a boat to cruise the Glen Lakes.
  • Ride your bike along the new Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail providing several miles of scenic and well maintained cycling between Empire and Leland. Rental bikes are available from Crystal River Outfitters.
  • Visit the Farmer’s Market, in the lot behind Glen Arbor Township Hall, Tuesday’s from 8am – 1pm. (Seasonal)
  • Visit The Maritime Museum and stroll around the charming remnants of Glen Haven.
